SnowSkool [SS]: Could you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you.
Dominic Roy [DR]: My name is Dominic Roy. I am originally from Québec in Eastern Canada where I started skiing at age 2. I moved to the Bow Valley in 2005 after graduating from college with the intention of teaching at Sunshine Village for one season. 7 years later I am still here and I love it more every year.
[SS]: Wow, age 2, they start 'em young in Canada! So, how long have you been instructing?
[DR]: I got my first part-time ski instructor position when I was 15 at the same hill where I started skiing as a kid. I worked there for 5 years and then moved to the Rockies where I have been working full time for 7 years.
[SS]: What level are you at at the moment?
[DR]: I am a Level 3 and I also have the teaching section of my Level 4.
[SS]: What's your favourite thing about instructing?
[DR]: My favourite thing about ski instructing can be explained by this simple phrase someone once told me: "Do what you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." When I teach I simply try to make people love skiing as much as I do and there is nothing more rewarding then to see that spark in their eyes at the end of the day. That is when you know you have the best job in the world. Oh and having the whole mountain as my office isn't bad either.
[SS]: Thanks Dom, any final 'words of wisdom' for new SnowSkoolers?
[DR]: No matter if you complete your Level 1 or 2 by the end of this program, as long as you put a little effort into it, you will come out of this program as a much better skier. However, if you really want to work as a ski instructor, don't aim for the minimum standard that these courses require to pass. The instructors who will be working with you through this program want nothing more than to help you reach your full potential as skiers and teachers. But at the end of the day we can only show you the path, it is up to you to climb the mountain and the summit can be as high or low as you want it to be.
[SS]: Cheers Dom!
[DR]: No problem.
